I guess you are using Messenger Plus! 3 for MSN Messenger 7? If you a want to see the contacts with their original names (with smilies), go in your contact list to Contacts > Show contacts > by nickname. That will do it.
And a hint, next time you ask for information, mention your Windows, Messenger and Plus! versions.
