It will show in colour to your contacts, just not above your contactlist. Add yourself and you can see what it looks like to others ;)
sandimanjames isn't talking about personal message, he is talking about his nickname.

sandimanjames, how do you add color formatting to your nickname? With the "Format Codes" button in the WLM Options window?

How does your nickname go to grey? Do you see the format codes at the beginning and at the end of your nickname?

There are two options in Messenger Plus! Live which affects colors of nicknames and personal messages:

Messenger Plus! Prefences > Customize! (Last tab on the top) > Main (First tab on the left) > Make sure the option "Use formatting attributes to color contact names in Messenger windows" is ticked.

Visit this page ( http://www.msgpluslive.net/help/registry ) and find the "ShowTextColorDefault" value name, and check your registry for this value. (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Patchou\Messenger Plus! Live\Your Windows Live ID\Preferences) and if it exists and set to 0, set it to 1 or just delete that value.
