You can use ZapMessenger for that.
You do not need ZapMessenger to simply uninstall Messenger!!

Go to Add/Remove Programs and run Windows Live Essentials. There you can select Windows Live Messenger (2009) to be uninstalled.

It is advisable when you are going to downgrade to a lower version.

Completely wrong!

ZapMessenger should only be used if the normal uninstall has failed and fragments of Messenger/WLSuite are left behind and are hindering other installs/uninstalls
