O.P. RE: windows live messenger 2009, XP. can't sign in, no error message
for the record, this VERY annoying problem was solved by removing Nvidia Network Access Manager. it had a VERY hidden firewall, that blocked access to a lot of things.
this was the LAST thing i thought it would be; i tried every single fix i found on the net, and not one of them worked. i tried turning off utorrent, uninstalling avg internet security (because i thought it's built-in firewall was what was doing it) but NOPE, as soon as i had avg uninstalled, in the windows security notifications that pop up, it said "ActiveArmor firewall is turned on." after that, all it took was a bit of googling to figure out what this was, problem solved!
