Are you using a skin? ( button > Messenger Skin) If so, try reverting back to 'no skin'.

Do you have any other Messenger add-ons installed? SweetIM, Smiley Central, etc. [See here for more info.]

Edit: Ah yeah, thought I'd heard about that problem.
