Sounds like those problems are caused by another patch or add-on for Messenger, read these posts:

Basically the solution should be to uninstall patches/add-ons that are not compitable with Plus! Live, like Clean Messenger, Smiley Central and others. If that doesn't work... re-install WLM and choose "repair". If that doesn't help, uninstall WLM and remove all the files left behind in C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger and re-install again.
