Very possible, this problem has been reported by 2 people before. See
Plus messenger v5 on WLM 2011 randomly crashing. The developers are looking into it and working on a fix.
A firewall could block the connection, although the standard Windows firewall shouldn't do that. But even if your firewall is indeed blocking the connection, it shouldn't cause a crash
