It looks like the online/away/busy icons been complemented with a video icon as well... and I can't find a whole lot that's different.
 
And of course Messenger Plus! doesn't work with it. (I miss using my own skin   )

 Maybe this might fix that "update available" popup that comes up all the time and just installs some Mesh-related ActiveX component in 30-or-so languages... 
 
Have any of the other apps changed, besides Movie Maker and Photo Gallery?

 As I just posted in the announcement thread, Microsoft Windows Live Messenger 2012 and Messenger Plus! compatibility, we are working on updates to Messenger Plus! for Windows Live Messenger and will keep you posted when this version is available.

Whats new is a windows live service and winsock lsp's (wlidnsp.dll) and .net 4
 
I went back to v14, I dont want all that garbage running just to use messenger!!

  The Sign-in Assistant service has been around in all the 14.x versions, possibly earlier.

 Ok sorry I have not seen it till I tried 2012 version. 
I try to install the .msi parts to avoid most of the other stuff. 
 
Still the winsock LSP's and .net 4 are too much for me.
