O.P. Cannot view smileys in nicks
When other people put smileys in their name (nick), all I can see is the code.  I can see the smileys if I use (!N) but normally (e.g. "<someone> says:") it just appears as the smiley code.

Before v3.50 I couldn't see them in myown name either, but I can with v3.50.

I have spoken to people and asked them to try different methods to put smileys in name, but no success.  They can see their smileys and mine, but I can only see mine.

I can't seem to find any checkbox or other option to enable/disable it in the preferences, and the registry options page is no help either.

Any idea what's wrong/how to fix it? :(

this should be the problem,

Also, make sure that your not using custom names with colors, because this disable it in the contacts window.

OK Show Emoticons was already enabled in Tools.  I unchecked the formatting box for the custom contact names but to no avail.  I re-activated view-by-name and this solved the problem, but now I've lost my custom names :( Dunno if its worth not knowing who is who just to see a few pictures.

Just thought of something.  I had view-by-email (custom names) on before but saw myown nick smiley in the conversation.

I just talked to me mate and he says hes on view-by-name so that would account for him seeing them.

Sorry for being rude in my post here but if you had read my link i put: Matty's reply to no emoticons

You would understand that it is a limitation to show Emoticons in names when Custom Names are enabled (even for those who do not have one enabled). The reason is because MSN Messenger no longer processes the Names to convert emotitext to emoticons because the "View By Email" option is enabled. Plus! takes advantage of the way MSN Messenger shows its emails and is able to change the text.

Also please do not double post. Use the [Image: edit.gif] when you need to add something else.

Sorry If I sound cheeky but I DID follow the link and read the post.  But as I said, I don't think its worth swapping custom names (and knowing who I'm talking to at a glance) for a few icons in a nick.
Thanks for the advice about the double post, I didnt see the Edit button.
