When you put your status to away a screen will pop up in wich you can set an automessage for your contacts if you wish to do so, detailed instructions: Personalised status tutorial
If you don't get that popup check if personalised statusses are enabled: Plus > preferences > Personalised status..make sure "display the personal status window when going away" is checked.
