Can you access your messenger account at all? Because if it unfreezes a while afterwards you can always set offline messages to appear as an icon in the menu thing (one such icon being the Plus! icon):
Tools -> Options -> Messages tab
There is an option to show your offline messages after you log in, or as an icon.
Please note that, you can only choose that option when you are signed in. The problem he has now is that whenever he signed on, an offline message will popup causing the messenger itself to stop responding.
Try this:
Uninstall every single add-ons, skins, patches. Thereafter, uninstall Windows live Messenger. Delete the folder itself manually; do note that the folder is still named as MSN Mesenger. Do a disk cleanup, and then restart your PC.
Reinstall Windows Live Messenger. If you don't have the installer, you can go to
http://messenger.live.com/ . Please do
not install the beta that's at ideas.live.com
Do
not reinstall any add-ons, skins, patches and/or whatever you've installed for messenger.
Try those steps and report back. In the future, please state the full version of the messenger you are using, the version of those add-ons, patches, skins and/or whatever you installed to enhance your messenger experience and what OS you are using.
