In window vista the folder is at:

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger

Note Administrator is the name of the account(so it's change)

In xp should be

C:\Documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\Local\Microsoft\Messenger

or

C:\Documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger

For WLM 8.1.0178:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<.NET passport>\ObjectStore\

Regular Display Pictures: UserTile
DDPs (animated/Dynamic Display Pictures): DeluxeDisplayPictures

"ObjectStore" ? I don't have that...

The proper directory for both XP and Vista can be found if you go to
%appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\...

EDIT: this is the path for previous Windows Live Messenger versions... Not the one for 8.1.x... sorry

Actually, %appdata% will not put in Local Settings. If you're using Windows API to obtain the path, you can use CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA, however I haven't been able to find an environment variable equivalent.

I'm not talking about the window API, but about the shell.

Indeed when you need to obtain paths programmatically one should never ever use hard coded paths, environment variables and also not the folders you could obtain from the registry (eg: the infamous "shell folders"), one should always use the Windows APIs for that.

EDIT: I see what you mean.... I gave the path to another older storage.

nevertheless, things said above, still apply of course

Yes those things you said are true, but not really related to what I said.  I simply meant that there was no %envvar% style equivalent to get to Local Settings\Application Data (as opposed to just Application Data which is where %appdata% goes)
