O.P. Shipping from Mexico to US or Belgium
Hi peeps,

Long time since I posted a new thread :P

Anyways, I need to find a way to ship a small package (more specifically a t-shirt) from Mexico to the US or Belgium.

Package:  1 t-shirt
Origin:  Mexico, Toluca
Destination:  US, California   or   Belgium
Shipping time doesn't matter, as long as it arrives :P

What would be the cheapest way (wat carrier I mean)?
Or, what possebilities are there to begin with. Not much at first sight.
Has anyone done this before?

Best would be that it would ship directly to Belgium. But shipping to US, California would be ok too since I have a forwarding address there.

A first quick search resulted in UPS, but that's near US$50 (to Belgium), eeek.

PS: it's not from an online store or something, just from a domestic address.

Why not just surface mail via the good old post office - that would take the longest but be the cheapest.  (Post offices are those things that sent mail before the internet:-)  It could be that because the t-shirt doesn't weigh much, the price may not be much more by airmail than surface mail but any local post office in Mexico should be able to give you the rates...and I'm assuming you know someone in the city where the tshirt is:-)

Mexican post office would take too much time to deliver it and its service simply sucks! I have used DHL before and I can't complain about it but it ain't that cheaper

DHL is the way to go.  You can always use Mexicos postal offices, but those can be risky, depending on what you're shipping.

DHL is also very expensive, and that's even without the taxes and dutie

That's because it shipped from the US. Mexico is a completely different story.... on all accounts (including int'l wire transfers with their own unique system...ugh)

--------------

Anyways, if DHL is used, they charged quite a bit to handle the import formalities.... (they're one of the most expensive carriers for this; more expesive than USPS and even UPS. Not to mention their not so friendly practices when it comes down to extra hidden charges like fuel tax, green tax, etc and if they can use the highest/most expesive rating for extra charges they surely will).

Also their pick-up charges (there is no physical DHL droppoint in the neighbourhood from where the package ships) are high.

And since the package's value is just over $29 (€22), it also means that, together with all the other extra costs, the shipping costs will be counted too to calculate the taxes and duties.

In other words, using DHL (or most other carriers, but DHL in particular) to ship from Mexico to Europe will get ridiculously expensive in the end if you take everything in account, and thus a real no-go.

Either way, in the mean time, I have found a way cheaper solution via a friend of a friend of a friend who took the package from Mexico to Italy. And he will ship it from there..... result: only a fraction of the shipping costs and no import duties or taxes at all.

Thanks to all who contributed and made suggestions though! (y)
