O.P. It's impossible to be warned of "contact signs-in".
Hello,

I've found that...

The contact signs-in option in Notifications Configuration is ALWAYS greyed.

Main MSN Messenger Window > Plus > Preferences > Notifications > Popup options and tick Enable Messenger Plus! notification windows then click OK...this should enable this feature...

That will only trigger the popups, not the ability to add a sign-in sound for a individual contact...

Actualy the option to trigger this is
Main Messenger Window > Plus > Preferences > Notifications > Popup Defaults > "Enable Messenger Plus! Notifications when contacts sign-in"
But remember, to use this you need to uncheck "Display alerts when contacts come online" in MSN Messenger options itself.
