in my school they have this program so when i logon this box pops up and it has categories like graphics ,english ,maths ,science and stuff like that.
when u click on a category it creates shortcuts on the desktop to all the programs in that category.
then when u log off they all go
is it possible to do this without a program??
( i have tried to do it myself using the startup section in the registry but no luck)

No, you need a program.

You could do a batch file for adding them to the desktop, but that would only work on startup, not on shutdown.
And you can't choose among options without a program that specifically does that.
