Can anyone tell me why I can put an emotion in a message and send it but the person at the other end only sees the text for the emotion such as  lll.

you can't send both, the only way your contact can see the txt if they turn off "show custom emoticons in instant messages" but then they don't see the pic

sorry totally miss read your post,  you need to tell your contact to enable "show custom emoticons"

tools > options > messages

and tell him/her to tick "show custom emoticons in instant messages"

You simply tell your contact to enable them by clicking on your name> personal settings>messages(tabs)> and check "show emoticons in instant messages" 


(this was just to tell them how to enable...)
