No i'm not worried and I do not have anything to hide. I just thought I would share this with people. It interested me so I thought I would let others read it too. I am not some hacking, illagal pirate if thats what you were getting at and i'm sure you werent.

Blah... that page is quite stupid... they talk a lot about setting preferences without a cookie...

That may be true, but it's very inconvenient. Using the bookmark every time you want to search? And what if you want to follow someone else's link to a Google search? The cookie ensures that your preferences always apply. :-/

As a PHP developer, I know that cookies are a very useful thing. :p

Silly question, why not just set the ID number to a space or some nil character, if the value is not a generated one how are they supposed to track you?

And yes, I have tried it, as long as there is "something" in the pref id section it will still work perfectly fine and google will not change it to a new id...A space or a single 0 would work.
