O.P. Contacts-on-desktop and XP Welcome screen
If I have any contact on my desktop though nothing else open, when I switch to the Welcome screen using XP's Fast User Switching it says one program is running. If I remove all the contacts, it still says one program is loaded, until I open the main contact list and close (to tray) it again.

I'm guessing that you're using dummy window(s) to show/control the contacts-on-desktop, and for some reason XP is thinking one of those windows is an open program.

This is why it says that:

Each floating window appears to show up in that list. I've ignored it as a rarely use that list.

Hmm, you must have a different problem; nothing shows up in Task Manager for me, and even Spy++ doesn't show a bunch of windows. The Welcome screen just says "1 program running", too, not more than one.

This problemwill be fixed in version 3.21. Windows won't detect floating windows as "programs" anymore :).
