I would like to know if there is any way a contact would know if I've blocked them or if I'm just offline.

there used to be a way. But MSN fixed the hole in the protocall that the block cheekers used.
if you dont have  the"allow people not on my contact list to see my status and send me messages" (im not sure if thats the exact text) option turned off then some block cheeckers can find out your status.
But if you have that option on, then its impossable for them to know.
