O.P. Small Contacts on Desktop Bug
When you have two different display settings for two different contacts on your desktop and you delete one of those contacts (through plus->prefrences->contact list->desktop contacts), all the other contacts display settings on your desktop will change to the display settings of the contact that you deleted.

I tested it more and this is what you need to do step by step
1. Put two contacts on your desktop
2. Right click one of them and go Change display settings->Set as Default...
3. It asks Do you want to set the current settings..., click yes
4. Next Change one of the contacts display settings (text color and background for example)
5.  Go plus->prefrences->contact list->desktop contacts and delete the contact off the desktop whom you DIDN'T change the display settings of in step 4

The contact whom you didn't delete display settings change to the display settings of the contact that you did delete (default settings)

RE: Small Contacts on Desktop Bug
I have another bug that seems similar: when you enable/disable the option "hide when offline", they all use back the default display settings
