O.P. Undecided  Betas making problems with java.
Once I installed messenger 7 and messenger plus 3,5
My java aplications started getting  lag (actually now those are always laggy).

Same thing happened with earlier versions if I close messenger ('exit').
In that case problem was messenger plus 'staying open' cure was
to kill messenger plus.

Well anyways, now if I even close all messenger plus and messenger prosesses problem isn't going anywhere.

Also, check that you have the latest Java Runtime Environment from Sun themselves (http://java.sun.com - latest is 1.4.2 IIRC).
