Hi, I was just wonderin if it was possible to hide some of the mail recipients's names when sendin them emails, so other recipients won't see certain email addresses. a guy sent me an email but it didnt say who it was sent to, even though I received it. basically it said that it was from him,his email address, the date and the time and the subject of the email, but otherwise, that was it, no "sent it to". did he have an option to hide all of his mail recipients's names so i wont see them, or was it an error from hotmail?? can you do this with hotmail or is this an ad-on option?

The option "BCC" when writing an email stands for Blind Carbon Copy. If you don't want anyone to know who you're sending a specific email to, just enter your own email address into the "To:" section, then fill in all the other recipients into the "BCC:" section and none of the recients will know who else the email was sent to

Do you mean that whoever is in the Bcc section can't see who is in the Cc section, or do you mean that they won't see each other's emails in the Bcc section? Or do you mean that you use the Bcc option when you dont want others from the Cc section to not know who else your sending the email to?

The "Blind" in "Blind Carbon Copy" means that every email in that line will be hidden for everybody.

eg: original mail from you:

To: person1@mail.com, person2@mail.com
CC: person3@mail.com, person4@mail.com
BCC: person5@mail.com, person6@mail.com

hello testing 1 2 3

---

Everybody (person 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) will recieve an email like this:

To: person1@mail.com, person2@mail.com
CC: person3@mail.com, person4@mail.com

hello testing 1 2 3

---

So only the email of person 1, 2, 3 and 4 is visible.

There is no Cc option here, does that mean they used the Bc option to send me their email? I got your explaination, but Im still confused from that email.......

In fact, for every mail you recieve, you never know for sure to what emails the mail has been sent also, as everyone can also use the BCC field if they like.

So basically, that guy sent the email to people using the Bcc option, hence it would explain that there is no "To" field in the example?
if Im in the Bcc field, I can still see the people in the "To" and Cc fields right, but they cnt see me? Im just confused with the example I gave, because that's what I received and there was no "To" or "Cc" fields....

Don't be confused, see above, you got it correct...

So he didn't use the "to" or "cc" options, but he typed everyone's email in the "Bcc" field so they won't see each other's email?

yep...

In fact using the BCC field, like he did, shows a proper and nice use of netiquette. It makes sure that the invited people don't have each others emailaddress. This is good for privacy reasons and also for one important thing: spammers and virusses!

If someone on that list was infected by a virus which gathers emailaddresses to send spam and all the addresses were in the TO or CC field, then in no time everybody on that list would be beginning to recieve spam from that infected person and risk being infected (if they open and execute the infected attachement).

^^ this scenario is actually one of the biggest reasons why spamvirusses and trojans are spreading so fast......

moral: if you want to send something to a bunch of people, use the BCC field....
