It's an option in their preferences (Plus! > Prefs > Personalized Status > Shorten my name when using a status tag checkbox) that they will have to disable themselves.

Well, the display names of your contacts have limits, and if they're near or at the limit of characters for their name, their name with be cut off by the personal status tag because that has to be able to fit into the limits.

Actually they are not shortened because they are near the limit. Patchou added the feature because he thought the tag might be hard to see if the contact used a long name.
