Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2
MSN Messenger v7.0.0425
Messenger Plus v3.40.112

whenever I set a personalised status and I have a conversation with someone, the emoticons in my/contact's name display as the symbols, not the picture. When I remove the personalised status the pictures appear again.

Have you tried uninstalling Plus! and reinstalling again (after a reboot)?
