it might be the firewall, try disabling the firewall and see if it works.

If it does, then there might be some settings in the firewall that are blocking it, the same thing happened to me a while back, with zone alarm.

Try lowering the security settings down a notch.

Mercury is pretty good. Look here or here to. I think it could be a firewall problem or try emptying the temp files, CCleaner is a good free cleaner. Might try to update the passport. If she is using version 7 she can pull up all the accounts that signs in with messenger and delete the one she having a problem with and add it back. If she dont have msn messenger 7 and has xp she can look at the different accounts that sign into messenger in user accounts in control panel, choose the user and look to the left and hit Manage my network passwords. I would restart after I removed a account btw and even do a cleaning. Another thing is if you can find the folder for her account in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\, might try to delete it. If you do that though she will lose all her emotes and backgrounds etc... . I would look around on mess and their forums and bigblue forums to.
