RE: AMD Sempron
the new sempron's are athlon64s without the 64bit features enabled

they're low cost processors, but i think it's quite valuable, depends on what you want to do with it..

RE: AMD Sempron
The Semprons are actually a mixture of rebadged Althon XP chips and indeed the Athlon 64 with the 64-bit part disabled. They are supposedly the budget range of chips as AMD move towards making the Athlon 64 range their mainstream line of CPU's.

Depending on what Sempron your sister has, you might be able to upgrade to a 64-bit CPU later on down the line, however from the sounds of it, I think the Sempron your sister has is actually one of the rebadged Athlon XP range.

Certainly I think a memory upgrade would be of benefit. The difference between 256Mb and 512Mb is quite noticable. The jump from 512Mb to 1Gb is less so. So another 256Mb of RAM would probably be the cheapest and most noticable upgrade.

Btw, a little know fact is that blade has an Athlon 64. I probably shouldn't have told you this as he likes to keep this fact a closely guarded secret. Cat's out of the bag now blade!! ;) (y)

AMD Athlon MP processors are aimed for server usage... semprons are mostly and widely used in home and office computers... I myself have a Sempron 2800+ (2.0 GHz) clocked to 2.2 GHz (with no extra cooling) and 512 MB of PC3200 DDR ram... the system works incredibly stable and fast...

the downsides about sempron processors are the small L2 cache (256 KB) since athlon xp has 512... so is the FSB smaller (maximum among semprons is 333 MHz) as on the other hand athlon xp has 400 MHz max...

basically what made me chose sempron is that since AMD stopped manufacturing athlon xp processors some time ago (to concentrate on the semprons and athlon 64s), it was impossible for me to get it from anyhere in scandinavia...

and the last thing is of course the most affordable price...:)

Indeed.  My comp right now is running on a Sempron 2300+ with 512MB PC2700 DDR-RAM.

spent just over £200 on an upgrade from an AMD K6/2 500MHz, and this pack included:-

AMD Sempron 2300+ retail boxed (cooler included)
Gigabyte 7NF-RZ motherboard
512MB (2 x 256MB) PC2700 DDR-RAM (purchased from a usenet group, boxed, brand new)
ATI Radeon 9250 256MB DDR-RAM AGP8x gfx card

Ok, It's still *slow* compared to most entry level stuff even today, but for the purposes that I need it for, it's more than enough.

I assume he means a laptop, most desktops have 512mb by default nowadays.

If I get that job @ Futureshop I'll buy discounted parts and get cheap ass RAM! :P
