You shouldn't do it actually... that's why Patchou didn't include it any longer in Plus! However everyone is doing it (including me) and I think it's better to run A-Patch, it's safe and has more features than just disable the banner, using a simple wizard.... good luck

Another patch that helps to remove the ads, and does other things is Ghost Patch, whish can be found here.
I haven't personally used this for removing ads (amazingly enough, my MSN never got the one thing that would've annoyed me in it..) but several of my friend have used it, and say it is very reliable and good to use.
