I have a bunch of contacts in my messenger that I want to keep and chat with, but I'm not interested on seeing pop-ups when they log in. Is there a way to block "xxx has signed in" messages for invidual contact or group? If not, I think that would be a good feature.

Using plus! you can choose which contacts you want notifications for. Plus preferences, notifications, popup defaults, and check custom sign in notifications.
