It IS possible.

you can't see area 51 through maps.google.com, it's blanked out. But you can see it through KeyHole!

There is a Google Maps service availabe for the UK, it's http://maps.google.co.uk

I've used it a few times and think it is pretty good.

This is the closest I can get to a satellite photo of my house

Edit: In fact, that's not even a satellite photo. If it was, a lot of that would be urban grey
