O.P. Shocked  Heling out a friend with viruses
My friend is having problems so I'm going to try to de-virus her PC - does anyone know what virus would:

* Prevent access to the internet
* Disable Anti-Virus Protection (McAfee this time around)
* Crash Programs Often

Thanks :)

Has she tried running a virus scan in safe mode? There shouldn't be anything disabling it in safe mode.

Also, you could suggest system restore.

McAfee won't start unless it's auto launched and trust me - System Restore won't do it :P

can you boot in safe mode with networking?
if so.. can just surf to trendmicro house call and run a virus scan through that.. also might just tring burning another anti virus program to a cd.. and installing another one since macafee is disabled cause of other viruses.
if that works, run adware, and hopefully you have systemworks to repair a crap load of things that the viruses would have done

i would suggest installing avast! antivirus and running a boot time scan with it. then, if you/she dosnt like it, uninstall it. I persoanlly find its way better than norton AV '05

yea never do system restore as it will not work..
hmm it mite be a trojan that maybe she made it run..trojans can delete ur whole HDD, but i'd say she maybe has a somekind of a very tough worm because it uses network holes to reduplicate itself and make everything slow.. or she just has a virus thats makin her comp confused

Safe Mode. That's your lifeline. If you can't get into that without the virus screwing up McAfee, then you should probably reformat.
