O.P. problems...
1) The turn on what I'm listening to feature has stopped working for no apparent reason.
2) I can't right click on contacts custom emoticons and 'add' them to my own collection anymore, and I mean for the unprotected ones.
3) Customess always fails to install custom content and I'm sure this is MSN's fault.

RE: problems...
For the what i'm listening feature, what media player are you using?

If it's windows media player, open WMP, Tools, Plugins, check MSN Messenger Music Plugin. If it is already checked, uncheck then recheck it.

If you are using Itunes, make sure this plugin is unchecked.

For the emoticon 'add' problem, this has happened to many people including me. The way to fix it is to sign in to your .NET passport account here: https://login.passport.net/ppsecure/uisecure.srf?lc=1033&id=10 then edit your profile so that you are from the UK. Then save your changes and the 'add' should be back.

For customess, what exactly happens, are there any error messages? Try running MSN without plus, sometimes, content fails to install properly when plus is running.

RE: problems...
The what im listening to feature could have stopped working due to windows media player shutting down unexpectedly or if you installed/reinstalled WMP 10. Do what Monster.rat said and try enabling the plugin again in the tools menu (it worked for me).

Im not sure about the Customess problem as i don't use it.

Yesterday i had the same problem of not being able to right click and add other peoples custom emoticons, but now it's working again. I thought it was maybe due to MSN doing service maintenance or something because tabs and personal messages were also not working correctly as a result of the maintenance. Hopefully it should allow you to add them again soon, just be patient.

When you sign in here  https://login.passport.net/ppsecure/uisecure.srf?lc=1033&id=10 , to to account information, the change your personal information.

You will then see stuff like first name, last name, birth date, etc.

Then, under the home location subheading, change Country region to United Kingdom. I'm not sure what exactly fixes the problem, so I just changed as much as i could to United Kingdom on that page and when i signed back into MSN, the add was there again.

I'm using my gmail account and have been for ages, but I'd never filled in those part, perhaps MSN brought it in and didn't notify anyone. But there is sitll no 'add' button for custom emoticons:(

Edit: tried disabling plugins
