maybe add custom statuses to the "Always sign in as:" menu on the msn sign-in window?

Don't custom statuses differ from profile to profile? Different Passports would have different custom statuses, so how would you distinguish which set to use?

maybe the user set to "sign me in automatically" in msn

or when you sign in ask then? i dunno probably a stupid idea anyway

Why not sign in to always offline, then change to a custom status from there?
