O.P. Plug and Play doesn't work
My friend has these problems.
The laptop plug and play feature doesn't work at all.

The CD drive doesn't play automatically, and, if he connects a USB drive, there's no USB icon in the systray.

I think there should be a setting to activate the plug and play, but I cannot think now.

Another problem is, if he opens My Computer, it takes extremely long to open the window.

Win XP SP2; 512 MB RAM; Intel Centrino 1.6 GHz

Thanks.

These are unrelated, and aren't Plug'n'Play related either.

What do you mean by the CD doesn't play automatically. Do audio CDs not work by themselves, or is it the autorun program that doesn't launch? The first is an option that can be set on a drive by drive basis. Right click, go to properties, then go to the Autoplay tab to det your preferences. The second isn't exposed in the GUI, but is able to be disabled with a registry entry, and obviously reenabled. I don't know the correct entry, so if this is what you need, hopefully someone knows it.

I dont see a USB icon when I connect a USB drive (or other device), except on my old computer when it is used to tell me that I am using a USB 2.0 device on a USB 1.1 port.

His setting is "prompt me each time ... "

So if he inserts a music CD, his computer does nothing.
There's no prompt window, or anything.

If he sets his setting to "Select an action to perform:," his computer does nothing either.

He got the problem since he bought the computer.

So do you just plug out a connected USB drive without having the you-can-safely remove-the-device message?

I thought it's not good for your computer and/or device.

What if he puts in a software disk that should autorun (such as the Windows CD, or a game disk)? Does the disk autorun, and does the label (name) of the disk show in My Computer?

It is perfectly safe to unplug a USB flash disk without using the "Safely remove hardware" icon. Just dont do it in the middle of saving the documany you've been working on for the past three hours.

The label shows up, but the autorun doesn't work for any software disk that should autorun.

Ok.. that's new for me :p

I think I need to emphasize the point that his computer does not detect any new hardware connected to the USB port.

That's strange. If the resistry entry I mentioned is used, the label won't show in My Computer, so it must be something else.

Has he tried different USB ports? Nothing I connect to my front ports works (I think they aren't wired properly).

Do the USB controllers show any errors in Device Manager?

The last time I checked, it was enabled.
His laptop is Toshiba. It kinda has different interface.
But I kinda forgot since I checked it almost 2 months ago.

Same result for all three ports on his laptop :-/
The ports work if the user connects to the device manually, i.e. when using a printer connected through a USB port.
But when he installed the printer, the laptop just didn't detect the printer (new hardware). So he had to change the setting after installing the printer, because he initially set the printer to LPT1.
