because ping is a command to test the message delay in irc, and it is used for the same purposes in msn (thanks to msgplus ) and perhaps even to catch the eye of the contact, one cannot pong themselves since pong is the response to ping, therefore one cannot get a response to a response

But what is "Pong! [?????]"

That's a nice question.

It's because, when you type /ping Messenger Plus! remembers the time you typed it, and when the response arrives, it does the calculations to see how much time it was needed to receive the message...
When you type "Ping? [msgplus]", msgplus, doesn't know the time you typed it, so a calculation can't be done.
That's why you see "Pong! [????]"
