http://audacity.sourceforge.com, it's easy to use and free.

If you want something a bit more powerful then you could try a software named soundforge. It aint free tho

if u have some money to shell out..u can go in for a more professional software like Adobe Audition.

Yup. go for this one

Acoustica Mixcraft is good.... Or if you're looking for some way to separate background sounds and such... WaveLab is incredible

I reccomend Goldwave

It's really easy to use, and it helped me a lot when i needed to do some audio editing

i use for goldwave for small things like converting sound files to mp3, wav etc
