I doubt 2000 is much smaller and anything from 98 that is incompatible with XP will also be incompatible with 2000.

Though it will run on like 40 mb probably, but then you need RAM for other stuff too....

Laptops are hard to upgrade aswel, its very fiddly.
windows xp is designed to work on a 512 mb Ram system. WHich means that running it on 40 will be so slow that it will take forever to load up. Windows xp will NOT run efficiently on a 90 mb ram system either.

False information = confusion.

XP will refuse to load if you don't have at least 64MB.

I hate to say this but that's wrong too

As stated on all official pages, documents etc, the minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP are:
• Pentium 233 MHz processor or faster (300 MHz recommended)
• 64 MB of RAM (128 MB recommended)
• 1.5 GB of available hard disk space
• CD-ROM/DVD-ROM
• Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows 2000 are:
• Pentium 133 MHz processor or faster
• 64 MB of RAM
• 2 GB with 650 MB available hard disk space
• CD-ROM/DVD-ROM
• Video adapter and monitor with VGA (640 x 480) or higher resolution
