Some of my friends have animated gif emoticons that are about the size of a postage stamp, but I can't figure out how to make some.  I can add them from other people, but making them and assigning them just reduces them to 60 X 60...

You need a plugin called Stuffplug
This plugin will let you add oversized emoticons and Display Pictures, it also has a lot of cool features.
