O.P. Help on MSN Chat History
How does one read an XML document? I saved several MSN Messenger "chats", and this is how they appear.

Quote:

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

"Just guessing, what might be the problem.. Your IE's
security settings are causing this error. If you check
Internet options -> Security, you'll see an option
"access data sources across domains". Its usually
disabled. Please enable it, and see if it works."

RE: Help on MSN Chat History
beamy-kitty, nice find. However the problem described in that thread was that the XSL and XML were on different server locations (or one on server the other locally or something), if I'm not mistaken. Normally you shouldn't change any security option in MSIE in order to view the Messenger chat logs as they are all locally stored.

So, it is well possible that TomKen simply has misplaced his MessageLog.XSL file or even has deleted it. Giving the same main error... And thus doesn't need to alter any security setting.

That shouldn't be the complete error. Was there anything else said beneath this (in bold text)?

Anyways, before trying what beamy-kitty has suggested in that quote she gave, make sure you have the mandatory MessageLog.XSL file in the same directory as where the XML chat logs are.

If you're missing the file, then reinstall/repair MSN Messenger (Add/Remove programs > MSN Messenger > Repair) and that should take care of the problem.

-

The XML files contain the actual conversations. The MessageLog.xsl file contains the layout of how those logs are being viewed. If that file is missing you'll get that exact same error.

The error comes from MSIE; it is a typical MSIE error, not Netscape.

Netscape does not disable XML in MSIE either.

RE: Help on MSN Chat History
The bug you speak of (present in a not widespread early build of version 8) made that XML's rendering in MSIE showed a blank page, not an error like the OP posted. Furthermore, as I said, the error message is a MSIE error message, not from Netscape.

RE: Help on MSN Chat History
I had the same problem and just found the solution:

Basically the problem is a flaulty 'MessageLog.xsl' file in the chat-log-files directory which might have been kept from an old version of Messenger. Once you delete it and try to view history inside Messenger it will generate a new 'MessageLog.xsl' file

SOLUTION:

1. Delete the 'MessageLog.xsl' file that is automatically generated in whichever folder contains your message log files.
(you can find this  folder by looking at step 2)

2. go to messenger
Tools => Options and click on the Messages Tab
At the bottom where it says Message History tick at least the first box of the 2 that are there (Automatically keep a history of my conversations)
Now where it says 'Save my conversations in this folder:' change it to the folder with your saved chat logs.
Click Apply and OK

Now RIGHT-click on any contact with which you have a message sitory.
Select from the dropdown menu
View => Message History
A MSN window should appear showing you your chat history (only if you have one)

The history should work now both inside MSN and by opening XML chat log files individually with Internet Explorer or Firefox.

PS: I am using Windows Live Messenger v8.5 and I had this problem for a while because I had saved my chat log folder from a long time back so I could format my PC

RE: Help on MSN Chat History
Hi, I got the same msg "The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later. "

The scenario: I have a very old desktop that I used about 3 years ago, had a bit of nostalgia and copied some msn history onto my laptop that I use presently. The person whose MSN history that I am trying to read is no longer on my present MSN messenger list.

I tried doing what was suggested here, but it's not working. Can anyone please help? Thank you so much!

Have you tried opening the XML file with Notepad? What are you opening it up with right now?
GOOGLE is your friend.
