i need some help overclocking my CPU and it is a pentium II  @ 233mhz.  i really am not sure what to do and i dont want to overclock it too much and cause the cpu to stop working properly.  thanks.

Overclocking is dangerous business, and should only be done if you know what your doing. Especially overclocking a CPU as it deals with the BIOS. Its not really worth overclocking a Pentium 2 but incase you try it on something else...

Go into your BIOS (Normally press del during a reboot) and change some settings first of all.

Disable spread spectrum.
PCI(or AGP) needs to be set to locked.
And stop unused clock should be disabled.

You will just have to browse around to find the settings. Now go into an area that contains your CPU settings and upgrade your frequency by 5mhz at a time save and restart. You will need to repeat this as you want but dont over do it. You can also try raising your vcore and other stuff, but do some research before you do. Try looking on some overclocking forums for help, its better to be safe then sorry.

.norma, you should just do it for me this weekend.  i went to this overclocking forum and its like 10 pages of reading.

Remember to turn it back to the reccommended settings after a while or your processor may burn out. They're recomended for a reason you know.

Its not worth it. Is that your main desktop?

They are recomended for the utter most safety from the manufacterer but the limits can often be pushed without harm. For instance, the back of all food packages gives recomended serving sizes but nobody follows those as quite frankly, they are ridiculous.

  No its not, and who said you need to use the bios? In fact, what else can you overclock besides your gpu maybe? But you are right about one thing, that proc ain't going to overclock too happily.

Anyway, If you're going to overclock that old thing, and I wouldn't if I were you, you should do it slowly (1 or 2 mhz at a time) and really stress test it after each change. Also, the memory will also have a speed in mhz (usually faster than the processor's) and by increasing the processor's mhz, you'll also cause the memory's mhz to rise for compensation. However, the memory should never go above what it was origionally set for, since that will probably cause you more problems. What you'd have to do while ajusting the processor's speed is to change the memory ratio to something lower (therefore slowing it down below the processor's speed)

It can't be overclocked.

My motherboard's name is Intel® AL440LX Motherboard

I used to have the same proccesor (look at pic below), and I couldnt overclock it
We upgraded to an Intel Pentium II 400 mhz proccesor, but because the (Grand)Motherboard was too old, it said that the proccesor was 266 mhz...
I went to the bios to see if I could overclock it, but it wouldn't allow me to alert the clock speed...
