ive recently had some problems with a new computer ive made, ive got 1gb of RAM, which is twice as much as i had on a previous computer which didnt have this problem. upon opening some videos, windows media comes up saying 'your computer is running low on memory' and means it cant play the vid! ive had a look at my processes but all i can see is this mischeivous svchost.exe.... should i disable it???

Definitely not; svchost (Generic Host Process for Win32 Services) is an integral part of Windows. It cannot be stopped or restarted manually. It manages 32-bit DLLs and other services.

svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: svchost.exe is also a process which is registered as the Trojan.W32.Dasher. It takes advantage of the Windows LSASS vulnerability, which creates a buffer overflow and instigates your computer to shut down. To see more information about this vulnerability please look at the following Microsoft bulletin: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx

This is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.

If you really want to piss someone off end task svchost.exe and watch them scramble to save there work before the timer reaches 0.

lol... my computer had a virus that infected the svchost.exe file....

it came up something something, computer must restarted then you had 60 seconds to do what you can...
argh!!!! formatting helped (not usggesting formatting!)

Just do this: Start -> Run -> shutdown -a

Did you try playing that video with another media player? (for example, VLC, winamp)
Are you sure you have installed the required codecs for that video?

To stop this do the following...
when it starts the 60 second countdown do:
start -> run and type: "shutdown.exe -A" (no quotes) that'll stop the 60 second countdown and shutdown.
okay, it's either the sasser worm or ms blaster worm (if it is in fact a worm) - if on start up it mentions "LSA Shell (Export Version) then it is the sasser worm and you should get these:

if not then it is msblaster and you should get:

that patch.

i'll try it with a different player later, i am sure ive installed all the right codecs, cos when it needs different codecs it tells me

im not even sure it is a worm eg/. does anyone else have scvhost  taking up that much memory????
