All of a sudden, this grey box now appears in my Firefox browser, with a red arrow in it

What's the best way about getting rid of the "weird grey box" without removing my bookmarks etc.

It is probably an extension that messed up?  What Firefox extensions do you run?  I'd reinstall Firefox too.

Ah thanks guys. Yes it was 'Download Status bar'. Somehow got corrupted/removed or something. Reinstalled it and it's gone now, thanks.

it's a problem often seen with Firefox. The best thing you can do is reinstall or upgrade to another version if you haven't the latest one.
