You can change the boss icon to anything you want.

Plus preferences > Privacy Protection > Click the icon which is there already.

When you run winamp, there is an option to have the program show only in the Taskbar, Taskbar and System Tray or ONLY in the system tray.
Has nothing to do with "minimmizing to system tray" or "hiding" the program.

That simply, even when the main window is open, the icon is only showing in the system tray, NOT in the task bar.

As far as I know, I've not seen the option to do that with MSN Messenger, though It would be very nice, as I am a power user, have many programs open at once, and I HATE a cluttered Task Bar!!

There is a plugin for Messenger Plus! which has lots of features, Window Manager Plugin (Dock, Autohide).

It has the option to hide MSN Messenger from the task bar, while it remains in the system tray.

I hope this is what you are looking for.

you could right click on the task bar and then click properties.  Then at the bottom click the button called customize.  then another window appears.  then find messenger beta in the list and beside the icon and the name of the program there is a column called behavior.  click on the messenger's behavior (probably is set to hide when inactive) click it and a pull down menu appears.  click on always hide and then click ok for all the other windows.   Now your icon is hidden in the system tray.  If you want to see the icon in the system tray temporarily click the arrow on the side of the system tray.

Yeah, but that won't work with WLM (no Plus!).
