The purpose is to show how strong the Gecko engine is together with the new technology. But I doubt it will ever make it in a fully, widely-used internet browser. Probably something that will be used in games and special effects in films.

Its just a proof of concept sort of thing really, he says its not meant as a replacement for a normal 2D browser. He had to do it at work and released it for others to be able to look at the code and learn from/improve it.
