O.P. Screen goes black after XP loading screen

my friend's computer has played up on him.

the computer boots up normally. BIOS is ok. the XP loading screen will show, but right before the Welcome screen, the screen will go black and only displaying the mouse cursor, which is moveable. I googled but did not find much. i found this article and he tried the steps (FIXBOOT and FIXMBR) but its still not working. I told him to repair his windows installation, and he will get back to me. any ideas what has caused this and how to fix it?

[Edit] he does not have access to anything except for the BIOS menu

Download this program

Save it to a floppy disk or burn it to a cd.

Reboot the computer in Safe Mode, Login as the Administrator account (will take awhile to load because it probably hasn't been accessed before.)

Run the Autoruns program and uncheck anything that doesn't look familiar or from a trusted site under

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can also use the http://sysinfo.org website to cross reference anything that shows in the list (if you have access to another pc to bring it up)

virus maybe? my computer did something similar to this..... but the mouse didnt load! i had to format

....

i think it may have been that sasser worm or doom something or other... (something like that wasn't it?)

also, i downloaded this cd image called windows xp live.... u write it to disc and change the bios to boot from cd instead of hard disk... it loads a really basic windows, but at least it lets you backup files etc. before formatting (if the hard drive isnt corrupt)

EDIT: im not saying that the problem i had is the same, nor am i saying to format it.... just some spare information...

i think the xp live would come in handy if all else fails though.

its not a virus as hes the only user of the computer and he is cautious of what he downloads

[Edit] i forgot to mention, he also gets a "Hardware diagnostics return code 7" message

You never said anything about safe mode. Has your friend even tried? Cause the black background showing just the cursor means that there is something loading causing it to hang.

yeh, hes tried all modes (last known config, safe mode, etc.) and still no luck
