Hello! I seem to have this problem recently with windows live and messenger plus where I cannot hear any sounds full stop. Nudges, winks, new messages etc, basically the whole messenger.
Are you using the Mute Script. If you are make sure you unmute it. Also are you using any patch , disabling patch's options which mute these will also do it.
