If it is msnmsgr.exe, yes it does. msmsgs.exe is not and could be a virus.

its windows messenger running on the background.

C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

run it, then

Tools, Options, Preferences, unmark Allow Windows Messenger run in the background.

As posted in hundreds and hundreds of threads already (always search forums first before posting!!! ;)):

msmsgs.exe is not a virus or whatever, it is Windows Messenger.

Windows Messenger is also an IM client and is installed by default in Windows. It also provides functions for MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger, so do not remove it/uninstall it.

Windows Messenger is more pointed towards bussiness use, while MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messnger is more pointed towards recreational use.

Windows Messenger can be found in the folder C:\Program Files\Messenger.

To properly disable Windows Messenger from starting up in the background (don't follow any other 'advise'),
see CookieRevised's reply to "I am about to rip my hair out over MS Messanger".

unrelated problem. Might be a hickup in Word or even a bug. Simply kill its process in your Task Manager (or restart your computer)

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: *sigh*

Windows Messenger has everything todo with MSN Messenger. And MSN Messenger has everything todo with Windows Live Messenger.

The post by Absorbation is wrong. If he explained the stuff I explained and then also said it could be a virus it would have been a bit more acceptible. But as it is now, he should have done some looking up first (I'm actually surprised he didn't knew it; or it had slipped his mind...)

Of course it can be a virus as every process can be a virus :rolleyes:. But his post was very clearly not saying that in that context. It is very obviously from his post that he didn't knew at that time that it was the process name of Windows Messenger.
