Firstof all, I've selected the option to show my custom emoticons first, but every time I open the panel of emoticons I see the MSN emoticons instead...

I don't know why this is happening but I belive it should be a bug...

About what version of Messenger Plus! are you talking about?

For Messenger Plus! Live there isn't a way to select which panel to show up by default... So this isn't a bug either.

The panels are sorted in the order you've made them.

And the one you've selected in a conversation window will be the one which will be selected when you open the quick icons panel next time as long as you don't close messenger.

Sorry I haven't noticed that... It should be a good addition to be available to select wich panel goes first no???
