O.P. [Solved] Polygamy -> Messenger startup twice
I've never used polygamy before, but now I started using the Plus! 'Multiple Accounts' function.

I was wondering: when the function is enabled, WLM is loaded twice into my system tray. I guess this is supposed to happen, but is it possible to not make it load twice (just once), but retain the polygamy function?

I only sometimes need a second WLM and just wanna open the second one using e.g. the WLM shortcut.

It shouldn't open twice. It should open only once. Maybe you've opened WLM twice by chance?

No this is not suppose to happen and it indicates:
- you clicked the program/shortcut twice by accident
- you have either some dodgy script going on
- the 3rd party startup program you use to startup Messenger is faulty
- you have multiple entries in your startup registry settings (in case you meant it is started twice when you boot up windows):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

O.P. RE: Polygamy -> Messenger startup twice
It happens on both pc's here and the configuration is a bit different.

My own pc:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (5.1.2600)
Windows Live Messenger 8.01.0168
Messenger Plus! Live 4.11.0.254
StuffPlug 3.0.286 BETA
Polygamy using Msgplus! Multiple Accounts

The other pc:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (5.1.2600)
Windows Live Messenger 8.00.0812
Messenger Plus! Live 4.11.0.254
Polygamy using Mess Patch polygamy

Active scripts both PCs have in common:
 • Activity Launcher
 • Email tooltip
 • File Transfer Plus 1.1
 • Key Flasher
 • Now Playing
 • ReduceMEM - Cookie Style
 • xPSM v1.1

It happens on both pc's on Windows startup, no shortcut involved. Both pc's only have one msnmsgr.exe /background entry in 'msconfig'.
When checking the registry keys you mentioned, only the HKCU-key got a msnmsgr entry (and only one), not the HKLM one.
No 3rd party startup program for Messenger or something.

I'll see if it has any effect on my own pc. On the other pc, I don't use the Msgplus Polygamy function..

RE: Polygamy -> Messenger startup twice
Does it also happen when you manually start Messenger?
Do you have Messenger Plus! 3 still installed?

Also, try to remove the /background parameter from the registry keys
(old post with more detailed info about this: "CookieRevised's reply to Startupmonitor issue").

Final, don't use MSCONFIG for stuff like this, it doesn't list all possible startup keys, gives not all the info and has a really crap behaviour when it comes down to changing stuff. Use a tool like AutoRuns instead.
(see "CookieRevised's reply to Removing items from "msconfig"" and "CookieRevised's reply to Start-up Programs")

----------------------

EDIT: after short chat:
It was indeed Messenger Plus! 3 which caused this, because it was still listed in the startup registry key with the parameter /WinStart which automatically starts messenger too (see linked post "CookieRevised's reply to Startupmonitor issue" above for more details).

I talked to Cookie and the problem was located in the fact that Msgplus 3 was still ran at startup. I uninstalled Msgplus! 3 and that should have fixed the problem (Y).
