awwww the nostalgic beginnings with blue tack jack :P

this month is going to be insanely busy :(

Gotta finish (and start) compiling a portfolio by wednesday 18th for uni interview thankfully I have a DVD of everything from my last (decent) project the music video one so no show reel needed really......

Oh by the way i got a Merit & Distinction for the music video :D
(merit for sketchbook, Distinction for video) (H)

For those interested I've ditched the cling film and instead had a brain wave and instead have heat shrink cable wrapped the model (well one leg at the moment going to see how it fairs up)

heat shrink cable is used in electrical stuff to wrap around wires it's loose then you heat it up and it shrinks around the cables/wires or in my case armature :)

RE: My New Project
Heat shrunken tubbing will become much less flexible. Though the degree depends on the thickness of course. It also isn't very cheap though and isn't available in very large sizes unless you pay a hell of a lot (thinking about the body of the dog itself).

It is also extremely hard to apply to stuff like the ears and all. eg: you wont be able to cut the tubes either, or even make a hole in it as that would render the shrinking useless; it must stay as a complete tube shape (hard to explain, but you know what I mean when you tried it)...

Anyways, it could indeed give it a real smooth look on the parts where it could be applied I guess...

Another material you could use is, and which is used to make real puppets, is a kind of foam. I dunno the proper English term (I think it is polyfoam) but it is similar to what is sometimes used as inlay in flightcases, but then in thin sheets. You can cut it any shape, glue it with normal hobby glue, or use a sewing machine, is paintable and is of course very flexible and extremely cheap.

Though you can't bring as much detail in it as with clay of course (hence it is mostly used for bigger models). But you could glue beats and other fabric or materials to make up your puppet... Though the smaller the puppet to more difficult of course.

Then there is the ultimate latex foam sculptures, but that requires making molds first and stuff. Though the big advantage is that you can twist and turn your model in any position without the surface being disturbed (like with clay) but while keeping the smooth and highly detailed look of clay.

O.P. RE: My New Project
I love my clay too much to go latex :P

So far the shrink tubing is pretty good and still flexible (Y)

the joints are all tuned to give me flexibility and stability were needed anyway so some are tighter than others anyway.

I'll probably use the blue foam block stuff from college over his main body, i don't plan on moving it's main body too much so will probably only use 2 pieces of foam one for arse one for front so i can kinda bend the body around a bit.

I'm also wondering whether I should make a foam ball base for the head or not, i gotta think of time and stability really, the armature's main head and mouth movement isn't great for this particular job really because I'm using such a big cartoony head.

ALSO I WANNA RE-USE THE ARMATURE SO IT'S NOT A PERMANENT MODEL (....if I win the comp this might change with the monetary value :P)

I'd appreciate it if we could talk over messenger again cookie so that i can discuss some ideas and stuff with you :)
