O.P. Disabling scroll wheel on mouse
My computer mouse is a bit dodgo at the moment, and whenever I try and middle click on something, the page will jump up or down and the cursor will then move from what I'm trying to click.

It's also led to another problem in this thread.

What I'm wondering is, is there a way that I can stop the scroller from working, without changing the middle click. All that Google is really giving me is how to stop scrolling on pages.

I know it's possible to use a Greasemonkey script to stop scrolling on all pages, but is there a way I can stop it for the entire computer?

Cheers

I don't think there is a way unless you can do it via super hacking or something, i couldn't find anything in control panel under mouse settings, so im guessing its a no go *-)
...there used to be a signature here :)

Unless you're interested in tracing and patching the driver, there's probably no way to do it easily on a closed source operating system. The simple solution for you might be buying a new mouse?
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.

contorl panel > mouse properties > hardware > properties > advanced settings  > wheel detection

then "disable wheel detection" may work, (haven't checked it tho)

I don't have those advanced settings, so it looks like I'm going to have to head off to the shop for a new mouse... thanks anyway

I did think about that, but then I'm pretty sure the middle click wouldn't work. And if there's a way that it would still work, I'd have no trouble making a mistake and doing more damage than good to the mouse.

I managed to lower the scrolling 'length' per scroll in the settings toddy mentioned above, so that's helped a bit.
